Instagram End-to-End Encryption Is Dead After May 2026. Thanks Meta.

So Meta is killing Instagram encrypted chats. Shocker.

If you’ve been using end-to-end encryption for your Instagram DMs, enjoy it while it lasts because after May 8, 2026 that’s gone. Meta basically said that nobody was using it anyway, so they’re scrapping it. Their words, not mine. If you want end-to-end encryption they want you to go use WhatsApp instead. How convenient for them.

If you have chats that are going to be affected by this, Instagram will show you instructions on how to download your messages and media before they’re gone. Make sure you’re on the latest version of the app or you might not even get that option.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. Back in 2019 there were internal warnings at Meta that adding encryption to Facebook and Instagram would make it harder to detect things like child sexual abuse material and terrorist content, and flag it to law enforcement. They went ahead and did it anyway. Now they’re pulling it back. You can’t make this shit up.

To be fair, this is a debate that’s been going on forever. Law enforcement hates encryption because it makes their jobs harder. Privacy advocates love it because it keeps your business your business. There’s actually a term for the problem cops have with it — they call it the “Going Dark” phenomenon. Basically meaning that encryption creates a space where criminals can operate without companies being able to hand over message content even with a warrant.

Others platforms have no intention of adding encryption

TikTok also just said they have zero plans to add end-to-end encryption to their platform either, claiming it actually makes users less safe. The European Commission is also expected to come out with a roadmap this year on how to allow law enforcement access to encrypted data while supposedly still protecting your rights. Good luck with that.

If privacy in your Instagram DMs matters to you, either switch to WhatsApp or start finding an alternative. Meta has made it pretty clear where their priorities are, and it isn’t your privacy.
